すき【隙】

1 〔すきま〕 an opening; an aperture; a gap; a crevice; a crack; a chink; 〔余地〕 room; space.

●もう一人入るすきがある. There is room for one more person (to squeeze in).

●すきのない dense; close.

●アリの這い出るすきもない. There isn't even a crack for an ant to crawl out.

2 〔つけいる機会〕 a chance; an opportunity.

●逃げるすきがなかった. I saw [had] no chance of escape.

●彼は兄がトイレに行ったすきにテレビのチャンネルを変えた. When his brother went to the bathroom, he seized the opportunity to switch channels.

●一瞬のすきをつく take advantage of a momentary chance; seize an opportunity

・すきをねらう[うかがう] watch for a chance; watch for an unguarded moment; try to catch sb off his guard

・すきを与えない do not give sb a [the slightest] chance 《to escape》

・すきを見つける seize [find] an opportunity

・彼女はすきを見て戸口のほうへ逃げ出した. She saw her opportunity and made for the door.

3 〔気のゆるみ･油断〕 unpreparedness; an unguarded moment [spot].

●すきなく武装している be armed to the teeth

●すきがない be constantly on the alert; guard thoroughly [carefully] against…; 〔議論が〕 hold water.

●すきに乗じる take advantage of an unguarded moment; catch sb off (his) guard [napping].

●すきのない理論 a flawless theory

・すきのない防備 an airtight defense.

●すきを見せる lay oneself open to attack; be off one's guard

・すきを見せない do not let down one's guard [reveal any weakness].

●構えには一分のすきもなかった. He was thoroughly on the alert [prepared at all points].

・うちの子はいたずらで油断もすきもあったものじゃない. My son is so mischievous that I cannot take my eyes off him for a single moment.

・君は俳優の中でだれが一番好きですか. Who is your favorite actor?

・私は幸四郎が好きだ. I like Kōshirō best.

・ゴルフはお好きですか. Do you like [go in for] golf?

・「ピカソはお好きですか」「好きも何も, 大好きですよ」. “Do you like Picasso?”―“I don't just like him; I'm crazy about him.”

・パンよりご飯が好きだ. I prefer rice to bread. | I like rice better than bread.

・彼はあの歌が好きでたまらないらしい. He seems to be completely hooked on that song.

・ファースト･フードはあまり好きじゃない. I don't much care for fast food. | I'm not very keen on fast food.

・あの人は私のことちっとも好きじゃないなんて言うのよ. He comes right out and says he doesn't feel anything for me at all.

・それは格別[特に]好きでもない. I have no particular liking for it. | I don't particularly like it.

・好きでもないが嫌いでもない. I don't particularly like it but I don't dislike it either. | I'm pretty indifferent to it. | I have no strong feelings about it one way or the other.

・母は都会の生活が好きではないらしい. My mother doesn't seem to like [enjoy] living in the city [city life].

・好きでもない音楽を延々と聞かされるのにはうんざりする. I'm sick of [fed up with] being made to listen interminably to music I don't even like.

・好きでなけりゃこんな仕事はできない. I couldn't do this kind of work unless I really liked [enjoyed] it.

・だれがこんな仕事を好きでやるものか. No one is going to do work like this out of choice [because they enjoy it].

・あの人は定年後も好きで働いている. Even after retirement, he works for the fun [love] of it.

・好きでいっしょになった仲じゃないか, もう一度やり直してみては. You two got together because you liked each other, so why don't you give it another try?

・好きこそ物の上手なれ. What one likes, one will do well.

2 〔物好き〕 faddism; eccentricity; dilettantism.

●また私設応援団やるのか, お前も好きだな. You're such a faddist, starting a private fan club again.

3 〔思うまま, 勝手気まま〕 the way [as, however] one likes.

●じゃ好きなようにしなさい. Suit yourself [Do what you like], then.

・この部屋は君の好きなように使ってください. You can [Feel free to] use this room however you like [want, wish].

・この金は君の好きなようにしていい. You can do whatever you like with this money.

・泳いだり, 散歩したり, 彼女は好きなことをして一日を過ごした. She spent the whole day swimming, going for walks, and doing whatever she felt like.

・いつでも君の好きな時に遊びに来なさい. Come and visit whenever you like.

・DVD なら好きな映画を好きな時に何回でも見ることができる. DVDs enable you to watch your favorite films whenever you like, however many times you want.

・たくさんあるから好きなだけ持っていきなさい. There is plenty of it, so take as much as you like.

・〔塗り絵で〕 女の子の服を好きな色で塗りなさい. Color the girl's dress any color you like.

好きにする 〔勝手にする〕 do as [what, whatever] one likes [pleases, wants, chooses]; have 《it》 one's own way.

●何度言ってもわからないなら, 好きにすれば. However many times I tell you, you just don't get it, so have it your own way!

・好きにさせる let sb do as she likes [wants, pleases]; let sb have her own way; leave sb to her own devices.

好きになる get [come, learn] to like [love] 《sb, sth》; become fond of…; form [develop] a liking for…; develop a fondness for…; 《口》 cotton to…; 〔異性を〕 fall in love 《with…》.

●私はこの絵が好きになった. I have come to like this painting. | This painting has grown on me.

・私がウニが好きになったのは大人になってからだ. It was only after I grew up that I got to like [developed a taste for] sea urchin's eggs.

・…はどうしても好きになれない just can't get to [bring myself to] like…

・私がお姉さんの恋人を好きになったら, お姉さんはどうするだろう. What would my sister do if I took a shine to her boyfriend?

・私は妻子ある男性を好きになってしまいました. I've gone and fallen for a man with a wife and children.

・一度好きになった人のことは別れた後も気になる. Once I've fallen in love with a girl, I can't forget about her, even after we've separated.
